Children's Books and Family History: All About Grandpa!

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the opportunity to know their grandparents beyond the titles of Grandma and Grandpa. Grandparents carry a lifetime of stories, experiences, traditions, and lessons that can help children better understand both their family and themselves.

Children's books provide a natural way to begin those conversations. Through stories, children can see grandparents as adventurers, storytellers, teachers, friends, and individuals with dreams, memories, and experiences of their own. These books encourage children to ask questions, listen to family stories, and develop deeper relationships with the older generations in their lives.

Whether your child's grandpa is nearby, lives far away, or is remembered through stories and photographs, these books celebrate the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren while highlighting themes that connect beautifully to family history.

Granpa by John Burningham

A young girl and her grandfather share a series of imaginative adventures together. Through playful conversations and everyday moments, readers witness the deep bond between them. The story takes on added meaning as Grandpa's health begins to decline, making each shared memory even more precious.

I love this book because it reminds us to treasure the time we have with our grandparents. Family history often begins with conversations, stories, and simple moments spent together. This book encourages children to enjoy those relationships while they can and to recognize the value of the memories they create together.

Grandpa Green by Lane Smith

A young boy reflects on the life of his great-grandfather through a series of beautifully sculpted garden topiaries. Each shape represents an important moment, memory, or accomplishment from Grandpa Green's life.

This book is one of the best family history picture books available. It demonstrates how an ordinary life is filled with meaningful stories worth preserving and reminds children that every person leaves behind a legacy.

I'll Be the Water by Alec Aspinwall

A young boy and his grandpa share a love of fishing. Through their time together on the lake, Grandpa teaches his grandson far more than how to catch fish. He teaches him patience, wisdom, and an appreciation for the world around him. When Grandpa becomes ill, they take one final fishing trip together. During that special day, Grandpa reassures his grandson that he will always be with him because he will be the water.

Years later, the grandson returns to the same lake with his own daughter. As they fish together, he passes on the lessons, traditions, and memories his grandfather shared with him, ensuring that Grandpa's influence continues into another generation.

I love this book because it beautifully illustrates how family history is carried forward. While we often think of family history as stories from the past, it is also the traditions, values, skills, and lessons that are passed from one generation to the next. Grandpa's story does not end when he is gone. Through the memories he created and the things he taught, his influence continues to shape both his grandson and great-granddaughter. This book reminds us that the people we love remain part of our story long after they are gone.

Poppy's House by Karla Courtney

A young girl travels to visit her grandpa, who lives in a yellow house on a small fishing island. During her stay, they spend their days chopping wood, catching fish, sharing meals, tidying the kitchen, exploring the island, and ending each evening curled up together in Grandpa's worn velvet armchair. As their visit comes to an end, both grandpa and granddaughter struggle to say goodbye and begin counting down the days until they can be together again.

I love this book because it celebrates the ordinary moments that often become our most treasured memories. Family history is not only found in major life events, it is found in shared meals, familiar routines, favorite chairs, and time spent together. This story reminds us that the seemingly simple moments we experience with grandparents often become the stories we carry with us long after the visit is over. It encourages children to cherish the time they spend with older generations and recognize that today's memories are tomorrow's family history.

Grandpa is Here! by Tanya Rosie

A young girl eagerly awaits a visit from her grandpa. Although they do not speak the same language, they find countless ways to connect through shared experiences, laughter, and love. Grandpa's visits are filled with large family meals, time spent together, and the joy of being surrounded by people who care deeply for one another. The girls only wish is that these days with grandpa go slowly.

I love this book because it reminds us that family connections can transcend language, distance, and culture. Some of the most meaningful family history experiences happen when children spend time with grandparents, even when communication isn't always perfect. This story highlights the importance of making memories together and shows that love is often expressed through presence, traditions, and shared experiences rather than words alone. It encourages children to cherish the time they have with older generations and recognize that today's moments together become tomorrow's treasured family stories.

With You in Spirit by Jenny Liao

A young girl learns that the people we love continue to shape our lives even after they are gone. Through memories, traditions, and meaningful experiences, she discovers that connection can remain strong despite physical absence. The story gently explores grief while offering comfort and hope.

I love this book because it demonstrates one of the most important reasons we preserve family stories. Family history allows us to keep the memories of loved ones alive and pass their influence to future generations. This book reminds children that while someone may no longer be here, the lessons they taught, the traditions they shared, and the love they gave can continue to guide us.

Trigger Warning: Granpa by John Burningham and I'll Be the Water by Alec Aspinwall have grandpa pass away during the course of the book. This may be upsetting for children who are not expecting this to happen.

I hope you add these books to your TBR (to be read) list! They are all fantastic reads.
