Children's Books and Family History: Home

Home is one of the first places where our stories begin. It's where family traditions are created, everyday memories are made, and the people we love shape who we become. Whether we live in a farmhouse, an apartment, a busy city, or a quiet neighborhood, home becomes part of our family history.

These six picture books celebrate home in different ways. Some explore the homes we live in, others remind us that home is found in the people we love, and a few invite us to discover how families around the world create places of belonging. Together, they offer wonderful opportunities to start conversations about your own family's story.

The Blue House by Phoebe Wahl

When Leo and his dad prepares to leave the only home he has ever known, he struggles to say goodbye to the rooms, the garden, and the familiar places that have been part of his everyday life. As he wanders through the house one last time, he realizes that while a house may be left behind, the love and memories created there remain with us. With gentle illustrations and heartfelt storytelling, The Blue House captures the bittersweet emotions of change and the comfort found in remembering.

Family history reminds us that many of our ancestors experienced similar goodbyes. They left homes, farms, neighborhoods, and even countries in search of new opportunities, carrying their memories with them. This book is a wonderful reminder that while houses may come and go, the stories, traditions, and love shared within those walls become part of a family's legacy.

Poppy's House by Karla Courtney and Illustrated by Madeline Kloepper

In Poppy's House, a young girl travels across a foggy sea to visit her grandfather in his cozy seaside home. Together they spend their days exploring painted houses, watching fishing boats, spotting humpback whales, sharing meals, and counting the waves rolling onto the shore. At the end of each day, they snuggle together in a well-loved velvet chair, creating quiet moments that become treasured memories. With gentle storytelling and beautiful illustrations, this picture book captures the joy of spending unhurried time with someone you love.

Some of my favorite childhood memories were made while visiting my grandparents. Their homes had their own sights, smells, traditions, and routines that made them feel different from my own. Grandparents' homes are often filled with opportunities to hear family stories, learn traditions, and create memories that children will carry with them for years to come. This book is a beautiful reminder that some of the most meaningful family history isn't found in old records or photographs—it's created during ordinary visits, shared meals, and quiet moments spent together.

All the Places We Call Home written by Patrice Gopo and Illustrated by Jenin Mohammed

Inspired by the author's own experiences, All the Places We Call Home explores the many ways people experience home. Through thoughtful storytelling, readers discover that home can be connected to family, culture, memories, and the places that help shape our identity. It is a beautiful celebration of belonging and the different paths families take throughout their lives.

Many families have roots in more than one place. Whether through immigration, military service, work, or other life experiences, home often stretches beyond a single address. This book invites families to talk about the places that have shaped previous generations and how each location has become part of their family's story.

This is our House by Hyewon Yum

This Is Our House tells the story of a family home through the eyes of a young girl. Readers learn how her grandparents arrived from a faraway place and made this house their home. It is the same house where her mother and uncles grew up, the same street where the little girl took her first steps, and the same place where the family continues to gather today. Through warm illustrations and simple storytelling, the book celebrates the memories that accumulate within the walls of a home over time.

One of the greatest gifts of family history is seeing how the lives of different generations connect. While many families move often, others are blessed to have one home that becomes a constant through the years. These homes witness first steps, birthday celebrations, family dinners, and countless ordinary moments that shape a family's story. This Is Our House reminds us that when several generations share the same home, they are not just living in the same place, they are adding their own chapter to a story that began long before them and will continue long after.

Farmhouse by two-time Caldecott medalist Sophie Blackall

Using real objects discovered inside an abandoned farmhouse, Sophie Blackall imagines the lives of the family who once called it home. The story celebrates the ordinary moments of daily life while reminding readers that every home holds traces of the people who lived there before. Rich illustrations and fascinating details invite children to wonder about the families who came before them.

Family historians often begin with old photographs, heirlooms, letters, and homes that have stood for generations. Farmhouse beautifully illustrates how everyday objects can tell remarkable stories. It encourages us to look closely at our own family treasures and ask what stories they might still have to tell.

If You Lived Here: Houses of the World by Giles Laroche

From treehouses and houseboats to yurts, stilt houses, and castles, If You Lived Here introduces readers to homes from around the world. Beautiful cut-paper illustrations showcase the incredible variety of ways people have adapted to their environments while creating places to live, work, and raise families.

Although homes may look different across cultures and continents, they all share one important purpose, they are places where family stories begin. This book offers a wonderful opportunity to talk about where your ancestors lived, what their homes may have looked like, and how those homes shaped the traditions and experiences passed down through the generations.

This collection of books reminded me that home is so much more than the place where we live. It is where family traditions begin, where grandparents welcome us through their front door, where childhood adventures unfold, and where generations leave pieces of their story behind. Whether our families have lived in one home for decades or have moved from place to place, each home has helped shape who we are. As we share the stories of the homes that mattered to us we give our children more than memories. We give them a deeper understanding of where they come from and help them discover that they are part of a story that has been unfolding for generations.
